Christians in Luweero Diocese have been encouraged to remain steadfast in their faith and emulate the commitment, courage, and determination demonstrated by the Uganda Martyrs if they are to overcome the challenges of life.
Speaking while leading Martyrs Day prayers at St. Mark Cathedral in Luweero, Provost Canon Fred Kabuye urged believers to take inspiration from the sacrifices made by the martyrs and remain firm in their Christian faith despite the difficulties they may encounter.
“Take the determination and commitment of the martyrs as an example. Remain firm in your faith and continue putting Jesus Christ first even in times of challenges because that is how you will overcome the struggles of this world,” Canon Kabuye said.
The prayers were held as Christians across Uganda commemorated Uganda Martyrs Day, which honours the young converts who were killed for their faith between 1885 and 1887.
Amid concerns over the Ebola outbreak, organisers implemented a number of preventive measures at the cathedral to safeguard worshippers. Handwashing facilities equipped with soap and water were installed, while hand sanitizers were placed at entry points to help reduce the risk of transmission.
Canon Kabuye also called upon Christians to reflect on the biblical example of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, whose unwavering faith enabled them to withstand persecution and remain loyal to God.
He said their courage and faithfulness should serve as an example to Christians at a time when society is facing growing moral challenges and increasing pressure to compromise religious values.
“Like the martyrs and the biblical figures we read about, Christians today must remain faithful and stand for what is right regardless of the circumstances around them,” he said.
Some of the faithful who attended the prayers said that although they were unable to travel to Namugongo for this year’s celebrations, participating in prayers from their local churches remained meaningful.
“Even though we did not go to Namugongo, we believe this day is important and meaningful even when Christians are celebrating from different places,” said Grace Wada.
The commemorations in Luweero reflected the broader observance of Martyrs Day across the country, with Christians gathering in churches and places of worship to honour the sacrifice, faith, and legacy of the Uganda Martyrs.
